Prambanan Temple, also known as Roro Jonggrang, is one of the largest Hindu temple complexes in Indonesia and is considered one of the greatest achievements in Hindu architectural art in Southeast Asia. Located on the plateau between Yogyakarta and Solo in Central Java, Prambanan Temple has a rich and colorful history.
1. Construction and Development Prambanan Temple was built in the 9th century AD by the Mataram dynasty during the reign of King Rakai Pikatan. This construction was carried out as a form of respect for the Trimurti Gods, namely Brahma as the creator god, Vishnu as the preserver god, and Shiva as the destruction god. This temple complex reached the peak of its glory under the reign of King Rakai Pikatan and Queen Pramodhawardhani.
2. Legend of Roro Jonggrang A legend related to the famous Prambanan Temple is the story of Roro Jonggrang. According to legend, Roro Jonggrang was a beautiful princess from the Prambanan Kingdom who refused to marry Bandung Bondowoso, a giant who fell in love with her. To avoid this marriage, Roro Jonggrang set a condition for Bandung Bondowoso to build a thousand temples overnight. With the help of supernatural beings, Bandung Bondowoso almost succeeded in fulfilling these requirements. However, Roro Jonggrang caused a commotion and asked the villagers to light a fire and make noise, so that Bandung Bondowoso failed to complete his task. Angry because of this failure, Bandung Bondowoso cursed Roro Jonggrang to become a stone temple. It is said that this temple represents Roro Jonggrang which is part of the Prambanan Temple complex.
3. Magnificent Architecture of Prambanan Temple Prambanan Temple consists of three main temples known as Trimurti, namely Shiva Temple, Vishnu Temple, and Brahma Temple. The Shiva Temple is the largest of the three, and each represents a manifestation of a god in Hinduism. Apart from that, there are also ancillary temples and family temples in the surrounding area. The architecture of this temple is very beautiful and complicated, with reliefs depicting Hindu epic stories such as the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Statues of Hindu gods and goddesses also decorate the temples, creating extraordinary works of art.
4. Collapse and Restoration Prambanan Temple collapsed due to a strong earthquake in the 16th century. For several centuries, this temple was neglected and covered by dirt and ruins. At the beginning of the 20th century, restoration and restoration efforts were carried out by the Dutch East Indies government and continued by the Indonesian government after independence. The restoration brought Prambanan Temple back to its former glory, and in 1991, UNESCO recognized this temple complex as a World Heritage Site.
